Dress Your Size: Challenging Stereotypes Through Fat Fashion

We've all been taught some items of clothing aren't appropriate for fat bodies. However, in 2012 we watched the viral fatkini challenge these societal norms, causing countless babes to rethink their relationship to their bodies. In Dress Your Size we'll explore the relationship between fat bodies and fashion rules, and discuss ways to leverage this relationship in the pursuit of Fat Liberation. Participants will be encouraged to use their bodies and platforms to help others face and process their own fatphobia.

Intersectional Perspectives on Fatness: Moving Beyond Body Positivity Toward Liberation

Fatness is an intersectional, social justice issue, and we need to collectively strengthen our analysis around anti-fat bias and size discrimination. As we engage in a deeper, more authentic intersectional analysis, it is critical that size diversity not be lost or made invisible in this conversation.

We have entered the Ozempic era and are at a critical moment in understanding that the answer to anti-fat bias is not a potentially harmful drug to make people less fat. The answer is the dismantling of oppressive systems (cis-heternormative patriarchy, white supremacy, and extractive capitalism) that weaponize anti-fatness. Fat folks are some of the most stigmatized people in most cultures, AND their stigmatization is often legitimized by a wider culture where fat folks symbolize moral failure and are therefore deserving of their ill-treatment.

This interactive workshop seeks to unpack biases around fatness and provide tools to create more welcoming spaces for all bodies. Further, this workshop will contextualize fatness as it intersects with other marginalized identities and the implications for those individuals and communities. While this may be a space for critical healing and validation for fat folks, this is also a learning space for folks generally who strive to be on the vanguard around social justice issues.

FatGirl Parkour: Redefining Wellness Through Movement and Self-Acceptance

After being medically released from the Canadian military in 2020 due to a traumatic brain injury and other service-related health issues, Kristin Topping chose to reinvent herself. As the face of FatGirl Parkour, Kristin infuses the journey with her signature self-deprecating humor, making the process fun and approachable for everyone involved. ‘Loosely’ drawing on the principles of parkour—navigating obstacles through running, jumping, and climbing—she comically confronts societal norms about what it means to be fit. FatGirl Parkour strips away the expectation of looking and moving a certain way; rather, it emphasizes movement that aligns with each person’s unique abilities while encouraging them to get outside and enjoy nature.

By turning challenges into opportunities for growth and self-discovery, Kristin creates an inclusive space where people of all sizes and abilities can connect, support each other, and confidently defy conventional ideas about fitness through joyful, personalized movement.

Embracing Body Trust: Navigating Fatness in the Age of GLP1s, Diet Culture and Medical Stigma

In a world increasingly influenced by diet culture and medical stigma, embracing Body Trust can be a radical act of self-acceptance, empowerment, activism, and community care. This session will explore the complexities of living in a larger body in the era of GLP1 medications, societal pressures, and pervasive diet culture. Many of us have internalized messages that the only solution to anti-fat bias is weight loss (possibly with the aid of yet another potentially harmful drug). But the real solution is in disrupting oppressive systems that use anti-fat bias to uphold their power. We can do this through both trusting our bodies, and building fat activism and liberation in our communities.

We will discuss the challenges and opportunities of fostering trust in our bodies, challenging medical bias, and highlight the importance of strengthening communities. Join us for an engaging conversation that aims to empower individuals to navigate these influences with confidence and compassion, while fostering a supportive community that celebrates all bodies.

Sexualizing Fatness for Storytelling in Liberation

The representation of fatness in stories is hit or miss. Will it be humanizing or a vehicle for societal fears? Are our characters given voice or do others speak for us? Are we allowed to feel joy, grief, or lust for the purposes of our own storylines, or as plot devices for others?

Stories are immensely powerful, they are how we communicate and make meaning of and from the world. Whether they are stories intended only for ourselves, stories written for entertainment, or stories written to change our world, we can make stories that resonant, embrace, and free us. With a combination of writing exercises, discussion, and presentation, this workshop will explore the role of sexy stories in liberation work, how to use sexuality to build compelling characters, and share space with fabulous fat folks interested in storytelling and eroticism for a better world. Everyone deserves stories that make them feel seen, heard, loved, and desired. This workshop will discuss sexuality and sex using direct and accurate words, and may include swear words. The presenter values accurate and shame-free use of ‘NSFW’ words and believes it important opposition to censorship and stigma of these words. Audiences can bring their own writing device, or the simple notepad provided. They may bring in their own characters and stories or not as they wish, and they may spend exercise time following the exercises in real time, or be able to refer back to the exercises later if they wish. Audience members should come away with a framework for using elements of sexuality or eroticism in story building and an understanding of applications for stories in social change work.

Water Sports in a Fat Body

Getting into sports in a fat body can be intimidating enough. Getting into water sports, where you likely need to wear active swimwear (which is in VERY short supply), a wetsuit (non-existent in plus sizes in North America), or technical apparel (that is often not available in plus sizes). On top of that, you may need to find equipment and gear (life jackets/PFDs, SUPs, kayaks, surfboards, etc.) that meet size and weight needs.

In this talk, through the framework of my own journey getting into kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, swimming, and surfing, I will share some of the tips (including gear I use and brands I love) to help other fat folks get into water sports safely.
